On a recent drive through Missouri, we saw these white little plumes of something fluffy floating through the air.

We wondered if it was cotton, or feathers, however as we got closer to the truck ahead of us, we were horrified.

As we approached the open wire cages on the truck, we could see it was filled with turkeys.

They were so cramped they couldn’t even stand. Packed to the brim in each crate (cell) they sat filthy, panicked and on their way to slaughter. There was nothing to keep the filth and feces from the birds at the top from falling directly on the birds on the lower levels.

We screamed in horror, sadness and outrage. These birds were being transported at 70 mph, in 90 degree heat in an open cages. However, based on the way the birds looked, this seemed to be the norm for their short lives.

Some of the birds appeared to be dead, or very close to it.

They were filthy. Likely from sitting in their own excrement in cramped conditions.

I am not necessarily against eating meat, but I am against inhumane treatment of animals.

You have an opportunity to let your beliefs and values known each time you purchase the food you feed yourself and your family.

Consider the quality of the food, is the quality of your body.

You deserve better. The turkeys deserve better. Consider humanely raised animals, better yet, save yourself some money and consider a meatless diet, at least a couple of days a week. Your health will thank you for it!
